My typical go to snack items do not appeal to me right now. They taste too sweet or their flavor is too over powering. I never fully believed my tastes would change that much but they sure have. I wanted to bake last week and made chocolate chip cookies with my son. I tried some of the batter (usually so yummy to me) and it tasted gritty with salt and sugar and completely unappetizing. One super warm gooey cookie did still taste heavenly but after about 5 minutes my head started to spin like it used to when I used to each sugar non stop throughout the day.
In discovering new food combinations, here are some of my new favorite snacks:
Plain Greek yogurt with a few berries (ideally blueberries)
A small bowl of cottage cheese
Handful of cashews or almonds (unsalted)
I am still finding new ingredients and mixing them into my diet. Most of the day I drink blended veggies, green tea, protein powder, with some fruit, flax seed or chia seed. I have started looking forward to these blends and each one tastes more unique than my default dinners were tasting.
Thinking back, I must have made spaghetti every week along with weekly (or more frequent) macaroni and cheese, and pizza. Knowing now how bread and sugar affect me for the worse, I can't believe I was eating both for every meal. People often ask me if I miss the foods I used to eat. I miss the feelings from eating those foods as I am an emotional eater. My worst default meal was McDonald's - two spicey chicken sandwiches, a large Dr. Pepper and three chocolate chip cookies. My head would be reeling afterward but in a lot of ways I craved that feeling. I often ate until my head spun and my eyes felt foggy. Not eating as much sugar or bread (nutritionally the same to our bodies), I don't have the brain cloud haunting me every meal.
This diet change has taken me about three or more years to fully be on board. Now I am feeling great and am happy with my food choices. A positive side effect - I keep losing weight!
Do you have any struggles or victories?
